Abner H. Barker, 91, died Tuesday, November 13, 2007, at Sullivan County Nursing Home in Unity, N.H..
Born on June 26, 1916 in Boston, Massachusetts, he was the son of Abner H. and Charlotte E. (Tyacke) Barker, Sr.
A graduate of Keene High School, Abner spent most of his entire adult working years in Washington, where he raised his family, farmed, and started Barker's Variety Store, which the family ran for 20 years. After his retirement, he and Marjorie spent nearly 30 years traveling the United States and Alaska, settling in Arizona and Oregon, before returning to Washington, New Hampshire in their later years to be closer to family.
Abner accumulated about 60 years of service to the town of Washington in the position of being the townâs first Fire Chief and Forest Fire Warden. He was a Selectman for 19 years. He was the Police Chief for many years. He was the town perambulator for many years. He also served on the Town Planning committee, and on the Bicentennial and Old Home Days committees. He was the town representative to the Dartmouth Lake Sunapee Region, member of the N.H. Police Chiefs Association, the Sullivan -Grafton law enforcement association also the Fire Wardens Association. Abner worked as a hunting guide for several years.
His family members include; 4 daughters, Roberta Hair of Florida; Gwendolyn Gaskell and Vivian Clark, both of Washington, NH; and Beverly Bender of Nevada; 3 sons, Philip A. Barker, of Washington, NH; Raymond L. Barker, of Hillsboro, NH; and Carl R. Barker, of Pembroke, NH; 19 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren and 1 niece. He was predeceased by his wife, Marjorie Barker, who died in December 2001, and by a sister, Alice E. Read.
At the request of the family, there are no calling hours or services. A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.
