Lebanon, NH - Adella Clark Youtz, 96, of 121 Mascoma Street, died October 19, 2004 at the Alice Peck Day Hospital Extended Care Facility in Lebanon following a brief illness. She was born in Mukwonago, WI on September 17, 1908, the daughter of Charles and Addie (Merritt) Clark. Her parents owned an ice cream factory in Seattle, WA and later a grapefruit farm in Phoenix, AZ. She attended Oberlin College in Ohio and traveled to China to teach English in the Oberlin in Shansi Program. It was during this time that she met and later married Richard Youtz. She received her masters degree from the University of Minnesota in 1933 and her PhD from Yale University in Psychology in 1937. She taught developmental psychology at Teachers College of Columbia University and later became a psychology professor at Kean College in Union, NJ from 1964 to 1984. While at Kean College, she was acting dean of the College of Arts and Sciences from 1970 to 1971. She was on the Executive Board and served a term as President of the New Jersey Psychological Association. She published many papers in her field and was interested in family therapy. She balanced her academic career with raising three children. She lived for many years in Leonia, NJ and attended the Unitarian Universalists Church in Paramus, NJ and was active on many committees. She moved to Harvest Hill in Lebanon, NH in 1998 where she lead a current events group, played bridge and volunteered at the Windsor County Court Diversion Program. She was known for her great understanding of others, her quite manor and her firm resolve. She was predeceased by her husband in 1986 and is survived by her children, Edwin Youtz of Emmaus, PA, Carolyn Youtz of New Milford, NJ and Kathryn Y. Wright of Plainfield, NH; her four grandchildren and three great grandchildren and several nephews and nieces. There will be no calling hours. A Memorial Service in Celebration of her life will be held on October 30th at 4:00 PM in the Dwinell Room at Harvest Hill in Lebanon, NH. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Harvest Hill Residents Subsidy Fund, 121 Mascoma Street, Lebanon, NH 03766.
