Alan Robert Goedecke, aged 80, of Bedford, NH, passed away surrounded by his wife and sons on June 15, 2024 after a brief battle with Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease.
Alan was born in Manchester, NH in May of 1944 to Grace (Goodwin) and Herbert Goedecke. He grew up in Manchester and attended West High School, graduating in 1962. He graduated with a business degree from the University of Vermont.
Alan enlisted in the US Army and earned the rank of First Lieutenant. He served as Headquarters Company Commander stationed in Stuttgart, Germany. After his military service, he returned to Manchester to join his father in the family business, George Goedecke & Son (now Goedecke Flooring and Design) which just celebrated 100 years in business. He added retail sales to the contracting business and opened a showroom in Bedford.
Alan enjoyed 54 years of being married to his sweetheart, Nancy Schindler Goedecke.
Alan’s life was marked by a broad smile while he served others. He was an avid outdoorsman and Boy Scout leader, and a charter member of the Rotary Club of Bedford, where he served for over 50 years. With his love for skiing, he saved the Manchester High School Nordic ski program from discontinuation, and coached students for over 20 years. He spearheaded the effort to create ski trails, founded the Bedford XC Ski Club, and facilitated the construction of a warming hut at Earl Legacy Park in Bedford. Alan led by example, was a mentor to many, and loved watching others succeed.
Alan became a devoted Christian in his late 20s. His devotion to the Lord was the foundation of his life and service. He served as a youth group leader, deacon, and elder. He helped found and build New Hope Christian Fellowship in Bedford and served people in need locally, as well as those in Honduras, Haiti, Tennessee, Maine and more.
Alan is survived by the love of his life, Nancy, two sons, Herbert and Peter, and seven grandchildren. Alan enjoyed hard work, and spending time with his family at their property on Lake Winnipesaukee. His generous spirit will not soon be forgotten.
