Alexander Chaffee Freeman, 49, beloved son of Castle and Alice Freeman of Newfane, died unexpectedly on Friday, May 31, at his family’s home in Newfane.
Alex was born September 30, 1974 in Brattleboro, and lived in East Putney for almost a year until his family moved to Newfane. He attended Kindergarten in Newfane and grades 1-8 at The Grammar School in Putney, VT. He was an alumnus of Buxton School in Williamstown, MA and received his B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College in 1997.
After college Alex returned to the Brattleboro area and was employed in the food service industry, most notably at The Mole’s Eye, the Weathervane, and Kipling’s Restaurant. At the time of his death he was working at the River Bend Market in Townshend.
Alex leaves his parents, Castle Jr. and Alice Freeman, at home, a sister, Sarah Freeman and brother-in-law Daniel Quipp, of Brattleboro, as well as his aunt Franny Taliaferro of New York City and many cousins.
He was predeceased by his grandparents, Castle Sr. and Janet Freeman of Chicago, Clarence “Chafe”Chaffee and Frances Chaffee of Williamstown, MA, and an uncle, Roger Chaffee, of Palo Alto, CA.
Alex was an intelligent, charming and eccentric fellow known for his sartorial flair. He had a large collection of hats, often favoring a fedora for his excursions into town.
He was an enthusiastic reader and student of film, as well as a talented author of prose, poetry and memoir. He delighted in a well-crafted sentence. He had strong opinions on politics, culture and current events, and a keen wit, with which he kept his family entertained. He enjoyed cooking, usually spicy Mexican and Middle Eastern cuisine. He was an animal lover, especially of the long succession of cats and dogs his family kept, and particularly of Freddy the longhaired dachshund, who was devoted to him.
Alex was a kind, loving, sensitive soul who will be sorely missed by his family and friends and all who knew him.
Memorial services will be private.
