Alfred E. Benson, 79, of Nashua, NH passed away peacefully at the Community Hospice House in Merrimack on July 28, 2015.
Born in Brockton, MA on July 6, 1936, he was the son of the late Joseph Benson and Murle (Lawson) Benson Rogerson, and stepfather Phillip "Mickey" Rogerson. He was in raised in Whitman, MA. Following graduation from Whitman High School he proudly became a member of the Marine Corps. He was stationed in Barstow, CA, with a tour of duty in Japan.
Al married his high school sweetheart Eleanor Dooley in 1957. After his honorable discharge from the Marines, Al and Eleanor moved back to Massachusetts, where he began his career at the FAA as a Teletype Operator. The family moved to Nashua, NH in 1964.
Al always put his family first; they were the most important part of his life. He treasured his grandchildren and great grandchildren and took every opportunity to spend time with them. He shared his love of camping with his children and grandchildren. He spent many hours on the golf course, and enjoyed the sport until recent years. He was an avid reader and movie buff. Al instigated many spirited political discussions with family and friends over the years. You would often hear him humming along to the big band music he frequently listened to.
He was predeceased by his wife, Eleanor (Dooley) Benson, who died April 7, 2003. He was also predeceased by their infant son, Michael James, who died Dec. 2, 1959.
Al is survived by his daughters Denise Carlson and her husband Richard of La Mesa, CA, Laurie Dobrowolski and her husband Michael of Nashua, NH, and son Steven and his wife Leigh of Charleston, SC. He leaves behind four grandchildren, Eric Christian and his wife Misty of Nashua, NH, Robert Christian and his wife Keira of Bennington, NH, Casey St. Laurent of La Mesa, CA, and Kristin McDonald of Charleston, SC, as well as five great grandchildren; Thomas and Emme Christian and Brayden Lambert of Nashua, NH, Cadence Christian, of Bennington, NH and Austin Kruse of La Mesa, CA.
He is survived by his sister Marian Costello of Plymouth, MA, his brother, John Benson and wife Pat of Orlando, FL and Marshfield, MA, and his stepbrother Barry Rogerson and wife Jackie of Bridgewater and Halifax MA, along with many nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will honor and remember Alfred's life by gathering at the Cremation Society of New Hampshire, 243 Hanover Street (corner of Union Street) Manchester on Sunday, August 9th from 1:00 to 2:00 pm with a Celebration of Life to follow in the funeral home chapel at 2 O'clock.
