Feisty until the very end, Alice D. Porter, known as Dimpy to those closest to her, died Monday, October 14th, 2019, at the age of 97.
She was born in Freedom, ME on April 20th, 1922, and was never one to stand still. She often worked at her father's sawmill moving logs as a kid. She worked at Raytheon in Waltham during WWII assembling parts for radars. This is where she met her husband, Stearns Porter. Little did he know, he'd be married to a fiercely independent woman for 63 years. Together, they moved to the Chicago area to raise their kids. Her sons remember taking long drives back to New England and conversations with her. Eventually, they came to Bedford, New Hampshire, to be with family.
She loved to travel, collect antiques, cooking, gardening, and sewing. A pastime she shared with her family was baking sugar cookies every year for Christmas. She is most famously known for her love of Mickey Mouse, which never diminished as she got older.
Daughter of the late Herbert Durant and Hazel Durant, she was the last living person from that generation, managing to outlive her siblings, Priscilla, Irene, Nellie, and Tim. She leaves behind her two sons Bill and Don Porter, and their wives Anne and Debbie, along with her grandchildren: Peter, Wendy, Lyndsey, and Erynn, great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She is now reunited with her husband, who passed before her on December 15th, 2009.
She will be missed.
A celebration of her life is being planned by the family for a later date.
