Listen to Obituary

Allen David Cunningham’s Last Call was October 30, 2025, in Rye, NH at the age of 77. When the end came, he had his family and the caring staff of Webster at Rye around him. He was born on May 8, 1948, in Boothbay Harbor, ME, to William Cunningham and Ruth (Hodgdon) Cunningham, and a part of Allen’s heart would always reside in his hometown. Allen graduated from Boothbay Regional High School, Class of 1967, before immediately enlisting in the United States Navy, October of that same year. He served for two years before being honorably discharged in 1969.

Allen was the life of the party. His infectious laugh, sailor’s mouth, and ability to converse with just about anyone drew people to him with the level of magnetism only a true extrovert could wield. Between his embellished storytelling and unique turns of phrase, it was impossible not to laugh while in his presence. Allen’s charisma and charm didn’t just acquire him a large circle of friends, it was also the very thing that allowed him to capture the heart of Dava, the love of his life and wife of 39 years. The two became quickly enamored, finding kindred spirits in each other. After all, Allen’s charm was impossible to resist.

Allen lived his life fully, never missing an opportunity to have a good time or experience something new. Strangers were friends waiting to be made, and kindness wasn’t just a personality trait, it was a way of life. He was generous, sometimes to a fault; the kind of man who would give his last dollar to someone in need and was the first port of call for help for friends. In typical New England fashion, he loved being outside, mowing his lawn, taking care of his prized vegetable garden (the best on the block), and grilling for friends and family. With the wilds of New Hampshire in his backyard, Allen practically lived in the woods whenever he could.

He was known as “Pops” to some, “Grumpy” to the children (a mispronunciation of Grampy that stuck like glue), and a father to three wonderful children with whom he maintained unique relationships. He was a regular face in the local Legion bar, took pride in taking care of his home, loved Dava’s cat Fiona, and always remained proud of where he came from. His generosity and mirth will be missed by all who knew him.

To quote Allen’s favorite band, Creedence Clearwater Revival, “Put a candle in the window… Though I'm gone, gone, you don't have to worry, no, Long as I can see the light.”
