The 1897th was immortalized by the 2009 book, Bulldozing the Way: New Guineau to Japan, by Peter D. Davidson. A Member of IUOE, Local 4, and the International Union of Operating Engineers, after the war, he was employed as a Bulldozer Operator and involved with the building of highways from Maine to Massachusetts. Before retiring he worked for Atlantic Sandblasting in Florida, responsible for maintaining equipment for sandblasting ships and barges around the Country.

Alphonse resided in Lawrence and Methuen, Massachusetts; Valrico, Florida; and finally Hudson, NH. He was a past member of the Knights of Columbus in Methuen, MA. Married to Rita (Theriault), deceased, of Lawrence/Methuen, for almost 60 years, he is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Alan & Carol Desrosiers, of Windham, NH, a brother-in-law and wife, Emil and Peggy Theriault of Methuen, MA, and numerous nieces and nephews to whom he was known as "Uncle Al, the Kiddies' Pal."
