Alphonse A Desrosiers
Alphonse "Frenchie" A. Desrosiers, 91, of Hudson, NH, passed on November 8, 2011, at Fairview Nursing Home of complications relating to a brief illness. Born in Lawrence, MA, son of Louis Desrosiers and Alice Grenier, both of Canada, he was the last surviving sibling out of his brothers (Gilbert, Mark, Louie, & Clarence) and sister (Alice Michaud).
Alphonse worked with his father for many years as a Tinsmith. He later worked in construction, for the railroad, and later as a Plumber's Helper prior to enlisting. He served in the US Army from 1942-1946, as a Carpenter, Construction Foreman, and finally a Bulldozer Operator. He served 22 months overseas in the South Pacific with the 1897th Engineers Aviation Battalion as an Amphibian Tractor Driver. The 1897th was immortalized by the 2009 book, Bulldozing the Way: New Guineau to Japan, by Peter D. Davidson. A Member of IUOE, Local 4, and the International Union of Operating Engineers, after the war, he was employed as a Bulldozer Operator and involved with the building of highways from Maine to Massachusetts. Before retiring he worked for Atlantic Sandblasting in Florida, responsible for maintaining equipment for sandblasting ships and barges around the Country.
Alphonse resided in Lawrence and Methuen, Massachusetts; Valrico, Florida; and finally Hudson, NH. He was a past member of the Knights of Columbus in Methuen, MA. Married to Rita (Theriault), deceased, of Lawrence/Methuen, for almost 60 years, he is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Alan & Carol Desrosiers, of Windham, NH, a brother-in-law and wife, Emil and Peggy Theriault of Methuen, MA, and numerous nieces and nephews to whom he was known as "Uncle Al, the Kiddies' Pal."
On Monday, November 14, 2011, there will be a gathering to celebrate his life at 1:00 – 2:00 p.m., at the Cremation Society of NH; 243 Hanover Street; Manchester, NH, followed by a Memorial Service.
In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions can be made to the Veterans of Foreign Wars (vfw.org/contribute) or 406 W. 34th Street; Kansas City; MO 64111.
