Andrea Jean
Van Thiel
November 27, 1941 – June 8, 2026
Andrea Van Thiel passed away peacefully on June 8, 2026, in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, surrounded by the love of her family. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, cousin, and friend whose warmth, resilience, and love of life touched everyone who knew her.
Born in Pomona, California, Andrea was the daughter of Paul and Alice Cuilhe. Throughout her life, she found joy in cooking, collecting cookbooks, and sharing meals and stories with those she loved. She was also known for her appreciation of fine jewelry and had an eye for beautiful and unique pieces along with being a yard sale fanatic.
Andrea is survived by her children, Michael Van Thiel, Lisa Van Thiel, and Krista Van Thiel; her grandchildren, Anna Havens, Gray Albani, Mara Van Thiel, Jordan Van Thiel, and Sarah Crisp; and her seven great-grandchildren, Audriena Hodges, Rylan Havens, Marlotte Havens, Della Albani, Miller Albani, Mason Webster, and Cameron Havens. She was preceded in death by her son, Matthew Van Thiel.
Despite facing many health challenges and being confined to bed for more than fifteen years, Andrea maintained an unwaveringly positive outlook on life. She greeted each day with gratitude, determination, and a sense of humor that inspired those around her. Her greatest wish was to live to be 100 years old, and she embraced every day she was given. Andrea cherished her conversations with family and friends, especially her cousins, Norm Smith and Thomas O’Laughlin. She enjoyed reading novels by James Patterson, discussing politics, sharing stories about Lubec, Maine, and speaking with the nurses and caregivers at Durgin Pine in Kittery Maine, who became an important part of her daily life. Above all, she loved talking about her family and celebrating their accomplishments.
Andrea’s legacy is one of perseverance, optimism, and unconditional love. She taught those around her to appreciate life’s simple pleasures, remain hopeful in difficult times, and treasure family above all else.
A Celebration of Life will be held in August in Lubec, Maine. In keeping with Andrea’s love for Maine and family traditions, her loved ones will honor her memory by attending the annual Blueberry Festival in Machias, Maine, staying at the Eastland Motel in Lubec Maine, and scatter her Ashes in Lubec.
She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all whose lives she touched.
Assisting with arrangements is the Cremation Society of New Hampshire, Hampton. To view Andrea’s online tribute, send condolences to their family, or for more information, visit www.csnh.com
