Anthony Robin Bowers, April 17, 1940 – June 10, 2026

Anthony Robin Bowers, “Robin” to family and friends, died on June 10, 2026 in Concord, NH, after a lengthy illness.

Robin was born on April 17, 1940, in Iver, Buckinghamshire, England, the son of Norman Bowers and Emily (Hardwick) Bowers. After visiting an exchange teacher and pen friend from Lansing, Michigan, Robin chose to emigrate at age 17 to the United States where he obtained his BA degree in English from Michigan State University and his MA and PhD from Princeton.

An academic career of 50 years included one year of teaching at the University of British Columbia, 20 years teaching at the University of Nebraska where he met his future wife, and fifteen years as a college administrator at Sweet Briar College in Virginia, Winthrop University in South Carolina, and Plymouth State University in New Hampshire. Yet Robin was deeply happy to return to teaching at the end of his career and to help unionize adjunct faculty at PSU, a quiet tribute to his parents and grandparents who had chosen education and unionization in the wake of mill closings in Lancashire and Yorkshire.

Robin loved foreign films, classical music, travel, photography, and visiting the architectural masterpieces of Frank Lloyd Wright, from Taliesin West in Scottsdale, AZ, to the campus of Florida Southern College. He enjoyed the chance to vacation in a Usonian house and have lunch on a terrace at Fallingwater. Above all, however, Robin relished spending time on both sides of “the pond” with relatives in England and with his adored children and grandsons in the U.S.

Robin is predeceased by his parents and his older brother David. He leaves his devoted wife of 57 years, A. Joan (Spivey) Bowers; his younger brother Paul Bowers (and wife Angela) in Oxfordshire; his daughter Heather Hockman and grandson Anthony Hockman in Florida; his son Adrian Bowers and grandson Emerson Bowers in Nevada; as well as numerous other relatives and loved ones.

There will be a Service of Celebration and Thanksgiving for the life of Anthony Robin Bowers at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Concord, NH, on Saturday, July 25, at 11 a.m.

The family welcomes memorial donations in lieu of flowers to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN); to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Concord, NH; or to the New Hampshire Master Chorale.

Assisting the family with arrangements is the Cremation Society of NH, Boscawen.
