ARMAND "WOODY" FRED WOOD
NORTH CONWAY, NH -- Armand "Woody" Fred Wood, husband of the late Dorothy Washburn Wood of North Conway NH, passed away, Monday November 13, 2017.
He was born January 18, 1924 to Fred and Maybele (Crechiou) Wood in Portland, Oregon. Woody spent much of his youth in and around San Diego CA. He was involved in Scouting, earning the rank of Eagle Scout. He was also a member of the Civilian Conservation Corp. In June 1941 he signed up to join the US Coast Guard. He served on several ships during WW II and it was during this time that Woody began his education working with Radar. He was stationed at the US Navy Radio Sound Laboratory in Point Loma, CA and later at the High Frequency Direction Station in South Hampton, Long Island and finally the US Navy Station Brooklyn, NY Radar School.
Woody worked for Raytheon Co in Waltham, MA for over 40 years, as an engineer on projects such as: Radar Moving Target Systems, Radar for the FAA, NATO and the Hawk Missile Systems, the Surface to Air Missile Systems and the Patriot Missile System. He retired in 1986.
After retirement Woody lived in Jackson, NH, where he was an active volunteer in town as well as at Tip Top House on Mt Washington's summit. He worked on the Jackson Covered Bridge restoration project, constructing a "to-scale" model of the bridge. He was a talented woodworker and created beautiful Wooden Ships. He was a conductor on the North Conway Railroad and a member of the staff at Heritage House in Glen NH. He had a great knowledge of history and loved to read, especially American and World War History. He enjoyed camping, skiing, golfing and fishing. He was a lifelong member of the Masons in both Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
He is survived by his children; David Wood of FL, Jeffrey Wood of MA and Lawrence Wood of HI, Deborah Werrbach of NC, Diane Willey of FL and James Sherpey of RI, as well as numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
SERVICES -- A memorial service is planned for April 15, 2018 followed by a military burial in the NH State Veteran's Cemetery in Boscawen, NH on April 16, 2018 at 10:30 AM.
