Barbara (McCarthy) Saalfrank, 81, passed away on September 5, 2026 following a courageous journey with Alzheimer’s.

Barbara was a beloved mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend whose life touched many people.

She loved gardening, wildlife, cooking and baking, traveling, and spending time with friends. These interests brought her joy and created cherished memories throughout her life.

Barbara especially treasured her years on Lake Winnisquam, where she and her late husband, Walter Lagasse, built a life filled with love and wonderful memories. After Walter’s passing, Barbara married Peter Saalfrank. Together, they traveled and divided their time between homes in Florida and Tennessee. Peter also preceded her in death. Though she enjoyed the many places she lived and visited, Barbara always considered New England home.

Barbara is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Speers Waitt and her son, Geoffrey “Jeff” Speers Jr. She leaves behind her grandchildren, Amanda, Aaron, AJ, Kendra, and Geoffrey, as well as her great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

She is also survived by her sisters, Margaret, Joan, and Anne, and her brother, Harold, along with many wonderful friends who were an important part of her life.

Throughout her illness, Barbara was fortunate to be surrounded by extraordinary caregivers. Her family is deeply grateful to the staff at Langdon Place and Beacon Hospice for the kindness, compassion, dignity, and genuine love they showed Barbara, particularly during her final days. Their care meant more to her family than words can express.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Barbara’s life may consider planting a tree or making a donation to the Alzheimer’s Foundation or an organization supporting compassionate hospice care.

Barbara will be deeply missed by all who loved her and by everyone fortunate enough to have known her.

Forever loved, always remembered.
