Barbara Ann (Uhl) Stewart passed away quietly on November 26, 2025, in Allenstown, New Hampshire at the age of 89. She was a resident of New Boston, NH for many years.
Ms. Stewart was born in 1936 in Hamilton, Ohio, the daughter of the late Harry E. and Pauline (Kostka) Uhl. She graduated from Hamilton High School, Hamilton, Ohio, in 1954. She attended Earlham College, Richmond, Indiana, 1953-1955. Barbara earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from the University of Ohio in 1958.
After earning a graduate degree, Barbara worked as an Occupational Therapist, first with the New York City School System and then with the Manchester, New Hampshire Department of Education.
Barbara was wicked sharp and witty as hell, a voracious reader, and lifelong learner with a passion for art, science, music, and dogs. She had a straight face, a salty tongue, a twinkle in her eye, and a bone-dry sense of humor with a Midwesterner-Yankee twist. Born in Ohio, she did her stint in the Big Apple and then went back to the land in the 1970s, building her own home on a dirt road in the New Hampshire woods and breeding Schipperke dogs working as an OT. Barbara was self-proclaimed "independent as a hog on ice," and, after the loss of her life partner Tom Noel, she lived alone on her own land until six months before her death. Barbara and Tom were lifelong choral singers and traveled several times to Europe on tour with the Dartmouth Handel Society and the Monadnock Chorus. Barbara supported many charitable causes from music and fine art to wildlife and animal welfare and felt strongly about leaving a legacy in support of her beliefs and values. She will be much missed and well-remembered.
Barbara leaves her beloved stepdaughter Lynn Noel and Lynn’s husband Phillip Nimeskern of Waltham, Massachusetts. She was predeceased by Thomas M. Noel, her devoted partner of 42 years, and by her former husband, Richard Stewart.
No services are planned at this time.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Barbara’s memory may be made to the New Boston Fire and Rescue Department, New Boston, NH.
