Betsey (Alfred) Crandall of Belmont died at home on Thursday. She was 62 and had battled cancer for thirteen years. Born in Burlington, VT, Betsey attended area schools and graduated from Burlington High School. In 1961 she was awarded a BA in art from the Rhode Island School of Design. In 1967, Betsey married James Crandall who was on active duty with the U.S. Air Force. She accompanied him to Okinawa where she painted and exhibited water colors which were enthusiastically received. The Crandalls moved to Laconia in 1974 and opened The Herb Shed, a plant and garden business. In 1983, they started a Morgan horse farm in Belmont. Over the next ten years, with the help of their daughter Amy, they boarded and trained horses and participated in Morgan shows throughout New England. More recently, as her health began to fail, Betsey spent the winter months in Bradenton, Florida. Betsey is survived by her husband, James Crandall; daughter Amy; a sister, Allene Sayre of Minneapolis, MN; and a brother, Samuel Alfred of Tucson, AZ. The family has decided to celebrate her life privately, and calling hours will not be held. The Cremation Society of New Hampshire is in charge of arrangements.
