Betty J. Ayers, age 94. Betty passed away peacefully on May 15, 2025, surrounded by flowers, with her daughter at her side. She was born July 22, 1930 in Des Moines, Iowa to Verna (Cox) Johnson and Victor Johnson. In high school she taught swimming and competed on the high school synchronized swimming team, winning the Iowa state championship. After marrying Richard Shane she moved to San Diego, CA. Betty was a gifted artist. She sculpted, made pottery, and painted with oils, pastels, and watercolors. She later moved to Connecticut and was employed as a secretary at the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics in Groton, Connecticut. Upon retirement, she moved to northern Vermont with her second husband, John Ayers. There she enjoyed gardening, painting, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and her Springer Spaniels. Betty spent her last year in Naples, Florida, enjoying her great-grandchildren and family. She was predeceased by her husband, John, mother, Verna Pond, and brother Victor Johnson, Jr. She will be deeply missed by her daughter Rebecca McRoberts and her husband Michael, granddaughter Heather, grandson Matthew and his wife Sydney, great-grandchildren Fletcher and Elise, and John’s children Debra Eddy, Andrew Ayers, and Philip Ayers.
SERVICES: She will be buried in Jermyn Cemetery, Jermyn, Pennsylvania. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the American Cancer Society or any charity of your choice.
