Bruce E. “Bumpy” Hicks, Sr., age 83 passed away peacefully on Friday, February 21st, surrounded by his family after a brave fight against cancer.
Originally from New York, Bruce relocated to Chelmsford, MA with his parents, the late Murray and Doris Hicks, along with his eight siblings. He was a proud graduate of Chelmsford High School, class of 1959.
Bruce was a paint contractor who ran “The Mad Painter” for over 50 years, serving both Massachusetts and New Hampshire. He found delight on the golf course, embraced the thrill of hunting, and sang along to the twang of country music and a love for the ocean. He could often be found basking in the warm sun’s embrace, even in the frosty grip of a NH winter. A true storyteller at heart, Bruce had a knack for weaving tales and sharing laughter, his jokes and anecdotes a source of joy for all who crossed his path.
Yet, the greatest treasure of his life was not found in stories or sunshine but in the moments spent with his beloved family and friends. Bruce’s loving companion for the past 50 years was his wife, Toni (Joyce) Hicks, a testament to a love that stood the test of time. Together, they raised a beautiful family: Natalie Houle, Tammy Kelly and her husband Gene Kelly, Sr., Deana Wyse, and Bruce Hicks, Jr. His grandchildren were his pride and joy, each one a spark in his heart; Gene Kelly Jr. and his wife Alyse, Nicholas Kelly, Alyssa Ranney and her husband Zack, Gregory Hicks, Jr., Tyler Hicks, Conor Ellis, and Jeremy Martin and his husband Joe. He was the proud patriarch of seven beautiful great-grandchildren, whose laughter brought him the utmost happiness. Bruce’s spirit will forever shine brightly in the hearts of those who loved him, a radiant legacy colored with love, laughter, and cherished memories.
Bruce’s family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff at the Community Hospice House. Their gentle care and comforting words surrounded him in his final days, providing solace during such a difficult time. For those who feel moved to honor Bruce’s memory, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Community Hospice House at 210 Naticook Rd, Merrimack, NH 03054.
Bruce is reunited in spirit with his beloved sons, David B. Hicks, Gregory Hicks, Sr., and Joseph Marino, III, who predeceased him. The family will hold a private interment, taking place at a time that is meaningful for them.
Assisting the family with arrangements is the Cremation Society of NH, Nashua. To view Bruce's Online Tribute, send condolences to the family, or for more information, visit www.csnh.com.
