Carmen Palmer, formerly of Hopkinton, died peacefully Monday, August 24, 2015 at Epsom HealthCare Center with her daughter at her side and surrounded by the love of her daughter, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She was 96.
Carmen was born and raised in Iowa, the third child of Fred and Cora Hansel. She and her husband Del celebrated their 76th Anniversary in January, 2013, just six weeks prior to Del's death.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her brothers Donald, Paul and Charles, and sisters Hilda and Iola and son-in-law Donald Thomson.
She is survived by her daughter, Carol Bernier Thomson of Concord. and grandchildren Robin English of Seal Cove, Maine, Roxi and Tom Decato of Pembroke, NH and Timothy and Sheila Bernier of Concord and four great grandchildren, Katie Moody, Ben Decato, and his fiancé Lily, Sandy Decato, and Patrick Faulkingham.
She is also survived by her sister Jean and former son-in-law, Floyd Bernier.
During the mid 50's and early 60's while living in New Hampshire, Carmen worked as credit manager at Scott Jewelry and at the Concord Assessor's Office. She and Del returned to Iowa in 1964 where Carmen worked for The Cedar Rapids Assessor's Office. Following retirement in 1981, the couple spent 6 months in the Philippines where Del worked on the hydroelectric dam being built there. The couple finally permanently retired, first in Bella Vista, Arkansas and then later to Alamo, Texas, finally returning to New Hampshire in 2010 to be close to their daughter and grandchildren.
Carmen was blessed with a green thumb and grew beautiful gardens wherever she lived. She was an avid card player all her life, teaching all her grandchildren cribbage with varying degrees of success. She was a wonderful story teller and letter writer. Carmen was a kind and gracious lady of great faith, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
As they were joined in life, the ashes of Carmen and Del will be joined together in death. A committal service to honor and remember them both will be held on October 3, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. at Pine Grove Cemetery, East Road in Weare, NH.
