Charles Woodbury “Woodie” Fifield III, 80, of Mason, NH died suddenly on May 10, 2004 at St. Joseph Hospital in Nashua, NH. Mr. Fifield was born on April 27, 1924 in Boston, Massachusetts, the son of the late Charles Woodbury and Claire (Young) Fifield. After serving in the Naval Air Corps Woodie attended Bridgeton Academy, Middlebury College and then Michigan State University where he earned a Ph.D. in Microbiology. Post-doctorate work followed at MIT. Starting in 1958 Woodie began an accomplished career with Millipore as a research microbiologist, retiring in 1984. He served on the board of directors of Fifield Inc in Hingham; a company founded by his father and run by his brother Dick. Always very active in the community, Woodie had been chairman of the Mason School Board, the Mascenic Regional School Board, and was a charter member of the Mason Volunteer Fire Dept., serving for 31 years. Serving on the board of trustees, as well as the Land Protection Committee of Beaver Brook Association, he was very involved with the preservation of natural land. His love of the woods and desire to preserve and share them with his many treasured friends and future generations will be a legacy for years to come. Woodie loved the ocean as well. He grew up spending summers in Gloucester and continued to enjoy time there with his brother, family, and friends. He was an accomplished sailor, a member of the Eastern Point Yacht Club in Gloucester and an avid HAM radio operator. For many years he sailed his sloop “Simplicity” out of Parker’s Boat Yard on the Cape. He is survived by his wife, Anne Calhoun Fifield of Nashua, brother Richard Tyler Fifield of Gloucester, MA., two sons, Dr. Charles “Chip” Calhoun Fifield of Wilmington, DE and Craig Woodbury Fifield of Stow, MA and three grandsons, Brian, Colin and Devin Fifield. A private memorial service will be held for immediate family. Donations in his memory may be made to Beaver Brook Assoc., 117 Ridge Rd., Hollis, NH 03049.
