Clifford “Woody” Woodworth Crowther, longtime resident of Newton, Massachusetts, sadly passed away on July 22, 2023, at the age of 95 surrounded by his loving family.
Woody was born in Adams, Massachusetts on June 14,1928 to loving parents, Clifford Thomas and Kathrine Phillips Crowther.
Woody's early years were spent in Adams and later moved to Newton, Massachusetts. He graduated from Amherst College and later went on to serve in the U.S. Army from 1951 thru 1954.
On October 31,1960, Woody married Carol Ann Crilly of Cambridge, Massachusetts. They began their married life in New York City and had 2 children, Bruce David and Tracey Elizabeth.
In 1965, he returned to Newton and entered the world of education. He became a very animated and well-respected English teacher as well a great influence in the Drama Department, directing productions such as Carousel, Music Man, Destry Rides Again and The Crucible.
Woody loved local theatre and had the lead in productions of Carousel, The King and I and Kiss Me Kate, to name a few. He shared his passion for performing with his students and children by directing school performances and teaching them to appreciate the theatre. His second love was Opera, his presence and booming voice were perfect to fill a performance hall. He loved performing to an appreciative audience.
As a teacher, he would do anything to ensure his students learned. He was not opposed to stepping inside of a trash can to demonstrate the difference between “in” and “into”. He was a larger-than-life man that went the extra mile. His past students still value his positive impact on their lives to this day.
We certainly can’t forget his other passion, Tennis. He was an active member of the Boston Badminton and Tennis club, always on the court, where he met some of his dearest friends.
Woody led a full and happy life. Our lives are better for knowing and loving him,
He is survived by daughter Tracey Hollowell of New Hampshire and son Bruce David of Florida, Three Grand Children, Bailey Katherine Hollowell, Brayden Hollowell and Charlene Olson. Two Great Grand Children Timothy Geddes and Alex Olson and dear friend Bob Moriarity.
