Damon Carter, 84, former advertising executive Damon Carter of New London NH died unexpectedly in New London Hospital on July 19. He was the son of William Joseph and Ruth (Damon) Carter of Newton and Rockport, MA. Mr. Carter was a graduate of Philips Academy, Andover (1938) and Princeton University (1942). A resident of Newton and summer resident of Rockport for much of his life, Mr. Carter worked in Boston advertising for over 35 years, retiring as Vice President of Humphrey Browning MacDougall in 1982. An avid skier, sailor and tennis player, he was active in the Sandy Bay Yacht Club in Rockport and the Waban Neighborhood Club in Newton. Upon retirement, Mr. Carter moved to Warner, NH. He was in the Warner Men's Club, a member of the Lake Sunapee Yacht Club, and active in the development of local affordable housing. His many friendships and role as Secretary for the Princeton Class of 1942 gave him pleasure throughout his life. He is lovingly remembered by his wife Ann (Walen) Carter of New London; daughters Janet and her husband Jay Lingerman of Ipswich, MA; Elizabeth (Betsy) and her husband Ira Levine of Rockport, MA; sons Damon, Jr. (Jay) and his wife Judy of Needham, MA; and Steven P. of Somerville, MA; granddaughters Beth Miller of Wenham, MA; Lindsey Miller of San Francisco, CA; Amelia Carter of Somerville, MA; sisters, Kay Shumway and her husband Peter of Etna, NH; Nancy Wheeler of Santa Fe, NM; six nieces, seven nephews; and three step-children and their families. He was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Ann Brittain Carter. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to the New London Hospital, Mount Holyoke College, or the charity of one's choice.
