Daniel (Dan) Henry Sullivan, 96, formerly of Westport, CT, passed away peacefully on September 15th, 2026, in Nashua, NH.

He was born January 25th, 1930, in East Providence, RI, to Ethel S. (Greene) and Sidney E. Sullivan. He and his brothers and sisters grew up in South Boston. After graduating from Mission Church High School in Roxbury, Massachusetts, he entered the Jesuit seminary at Shadowbrook in Lenox, MA. He later attended the Weston School of Theology at Boston College and was ordained in 1960, celebrating his first Mass in Hyannis, MA.

During his time in the Jesuits, Dan began his life-long career of teaching Latin and Greek, which led to years spent at Fairfield Preparatory School, Greenwich Day School and Staples High School in Westport, CT (where he often arrived on his motorcycle). During his time as a teacher, he was an inspiration to his students and kept in touch with several for years after his retirement.

In 1974, Dan met the great love of his life, Maria Thompson. Married in August of 1979, they put on many miles together, discovering every corner of New England. They found their home-away-from-home in Vils, Austria, where he hiked, swam in mountain lakes (sometimes as thunderstorms approached), and explored shops and small villages with Maria. In the spirit of adventure, Dan was always up for a quick trip to the North End of Boston for cannoli, no matter the time or the distance.

Dan had a life-long insatiable curiosity and a love of reading and language. He was always ready to discuss an article from the New York Times (which he read from cover-to-cover), or recite a stanza of Latin poetry. He had books in Latin, German, and Greek by his reading chair at all times, along with thrillers, poetry, and books about any subject about which he was curious and wanted to learn. He will be remembered as an exceptionally kind and gentle soul, forever gracious and grateful to those in his life.

Dan is predeceased by his beloved wife Maria Thompson (whom he lovingly referred to as Rafaella), his parents, his brothers and sisters Sidney Sullivan, Harold Sullivan, Ethel Dow, Patricia Johnson, Sheila Vigenski and Mary Margaret Sullivan; and his step-son Scott Thompson. He is survived by his step-son Keith (Kate) Thompson, grandchildren Heather, Tara, Erik and Bridget; great-children Zachary, Gemma and Isabella; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews who held him very close.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Saugatuck Congregational Church, 245 Post Rd E, Westport, CT 06880, on Saturday, November 7, 2026 at 11:00 am.

Assisting the family with arrangements is the Cremation Society of NH, Manchester.
