David A. Garnett Sr, PSG USAR (retired) passed away 2 months shy of his 80th birthday. Born in Wareham, MA to William Garnett and Anne (Eldridge) Locke, he was the 4th of 6 children and grew up in Nantucket, MA.
A Vietnam veteran and member of the US Army Reserve for 20 years, he retired from the USAR as a Platoon Sargent in 1989. He completed the Corrections Academy at NH Police Standards and Training and served as a corrections officer and in private security, memorably patrolling Bike Week in Laconia in the mid 80’s. He returned to Nantucket for a number of years, working as an LNA and in Maintenance at Our Island Home. When he decided to again live in New Hampshire, he worked in security for the TSA at the Manchester Boston Regional Airport. He transitioned back into roles in Maintenance, serving as a Maintenance Supervisor at the Birches, then as a painter and member of the Maintenance crew at Hodges Property Management, where he finally laid down his tools and retired.
David enjoyed engines and all things mechanical; crossword puzzles; and playing innumerable hours of cribbage with his kids. He was a great cook, known for his incredible turkey with gibblet gravy and liver with onions. He enjoyed reading, in particular US military history, detective fiction and Harry Potter. He prized his collection of Budweiser beer steins and Boston Bean Pots. Over the years he amassed a veritable Blockbuster DVD library of movies and TV series with Bluebloods, NCIS, and yes, the Harry Potter series among his favorites.
David had many roles and titles over the years—friend, son and brother, Sargent first class, Mr Fix-it, Grandpa and Grampy—but his most valued title was Dad, and he was truly proud of his children. He leaves behind his six children: Jacqueline Go and her partner Jason Richer of North Smithfield, RI; David Garnett, Jr. and his wife Tammy of Chichester; Calvin Garnett of Concord; Denine Garnett of Concord; William Garnett and his wife Jackie of Dover; Adam Garnett and his wife Amanda of Keene. He is survived by his six grandchildren, Nicholas Go and his wife Rachel, Natalie Go, Kelly Garnett, Mason Garnett, Nolan and Catherine Garnett, and great-granddaughter Joya Go. He is also survived by his brothers, John Locke and Bruce Locke, his niece Ann, as well as his niece Margaret Read and her husband Philip.
He is predeceased by his parents, sisters Frances Conover and Louise G. McGarvey, and brother William Garnett.
A graveside service is scheduled for 10am on December 6, 2024, at the NH State Veterans Cemetery, 110 Daniel Webster Hwy, Boscawen NH.
