David was born on September 6, 1933 in Manchester, NH to Catherine (McCarthy) and Henry J. Stone. He spent his youth in Manchester with his brothers Henry, Daniel and William until attending Kimball Union Academy in Meriden, NH and then Middlebury College in Vermont, where he graduated with the Class of 1955. David spent his summers working as a lifeguard at Hampton Beach. Upon graduation, David joined the military and was stationed overseas in Germany where he served as a First Lieutenant in the US Army. It was there that he met his first love, Ingeborg Hofer. David and Ingeborg were married in St. Catherine’s Church in Manchester, NH in 1961. They were married for 28 years and raised three children until Ingeborg’s untimely death in 1990.

David married Barbara Collins of Greenland, NH, in 1993. During their almost 28 year marriage, they travelled extensively throughout the world. David’s and Barbara also shared a love of skiing and bicycling. Together, the two bicycled across the United States from coast to coast in the summer 1995. At the time of his passing, Barbara was the love of his life and was with him at his bedside.

From an early age, David held a lifelong affinity for skiing and swimming. Throughout his life, he skied extensively throughout Europe, the United States and Canada. David was a cofounder of Stone and Michaud Insurance, where he worked until retirement. Whether working, skiing, biking, swimming or any other activity, David put every ounce of his competitive nature into everything he pursued.
