Delphus Palmer, formerly of Hopkinton died March 2, 2013 surrounded by his grandchildren and great granddaughter at Epsom HealthCare Center. He was 94.
Del was born and raised in Iowa, the third child of the late David and Tina Palmer. Del and his wife Carmen, also residing at the Epsom HealthCare Center, celebrated their 76th wedding anniversary this past January. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers Glen and Richard, sister Zala, and son-in-law Donald Thomson.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Carol Bernier Thomson of Concord, and grandchildren, Robin English of Seal Cove, Maine, Roxi and Tom Decato of Pembroke, NH and Timothy and Sheila Bernier of Concord, NH and four great grandchildren, Katie Moody, Ben and Sandy Decato, and Patrick Faulkingham. He is survived by his brother Kenneth and sisters Ivanelle, Helen, Vivien and Etta, nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his special friend and former son-in-law Floyd Bernier of Naples, FL.
In early adulthood Del worked in the construction industry then moved into a career with FMC/Link Belt as a service representative which brought the family to the northeast and eventually New Hampshire. Del and Carmen returned to Iowa in 1964 where he headed the design test pad of the crane division for FMC. Following an early retirement in 1981, Del was honored to be asked to help build a hydro-electric dam in the Philippines. He and Carmen spent a rewarding and educational 6 months there before truly retiring, first to Bella Vista, Arkansas and then later to Alamo, Texas. Del kept busy with various woodworking and construction projects in his retirement. In 2010 he and his wife came back to New Hampshire to be closer to their daughter, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Del was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather who never met a stranger and will be greatly missed.
A committal service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 225 North Michigan Ave., Floor 17, Chicago, IL 60601, www.alz.org/research. Please specify "for research" when donating.
