Donald Angus Locke died October 24th, 2023.
Angus, as he was called, resided in Durham, NH. He was born in Berlin, NH on August 3rd, 1938 to Shelton Hugh Locke and Barbara Graves Locke. He was predeceased in 2020 by his sister Barbara Ellen Locke, and is survived by a brother, James Locke of Loudon, NH and several cousins.
An accomplished musician, in his last few years he was the organist for the Indonesian Church in Rochester, NH, and volunteered to play in several nursing homes. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Plymouth State College and his master’s degree from UNH. He taught school for several years and was business manager of the Lincoln Opera House, a summer theater in Lincoln, NH. For over thirty years Angus was the Director of the New Hampshire Art Association. For a long time, he was the force that kept the Art Association alive. He ran their galleries in Manchester and in Portsmouth, wrote grants, prepared catalogues, and worked on fund raisers. He organized Association sponsored classes at Prescott Park, Boscawen, and Manchester and worked with the League of NH Craftsmen to maintain the NHAA tent at the Sunapee Craft Fair. He organized an art rental program that would circulate artists' works to businesses and public places such as libraries, helping the public realize the talent that resides in New Hampshire.
Angus was extremely kind and thoughtful and was highly regarded by the many members of the New Hampshire Art Association. He knew everyone by name and by their artistic style. He was an ardent believer in the sacred and mysterious importance of the fine arts. He believed that they give us comfort, hope, and solace, and help us to understand ourselves and the world around us.
A memorial service will be held at the Concord, NH Unitarian Universalist Church on December 2nd at 11:00 A.M. followed by a luncheon at Alan's Restaurant in Boscawen, NH.
