Dorothy I. (O'Hara) Eaves, 86, died Wednesday, October 12, 2016 at The Inn at Deerfield in Deerfield, NH. She was born in Brooklyn, NY on November 20, 1929 to the late V. Winthrop O'Hara and Belle (Callum) O'Hara of Winter Park, FL and Montclair, NJ.
She was the wife of H. Wilson Eaves. They were married on August 21, 1954 in Montclair, NJ.
She graduated from Montclair High School in Montclair, NJ before achieving higher levels of education, including receiving her bachelor's degree from Trenton State College in 1951 and graduate study at Hofstra University in New York. A lifelong love of learning also led her to pursue additional study at Nassau Community College in NY. Dorothy loved children, therefore, her service as a kindergarten teacher was joyful to her. She worked at several different schools throughout her career, including in Washington Township, NJ; Glen Rock Public Schools, NJ; Woodmere Academy, NY; and the University of New Hampshire Marine Docent program.
Dorothy was a very active member of the Exeter Congregational Church; she participated in the choir, played the hand bells, volunteered for the mission and action committee, and was a bible study teacher. Previously, she had been a bible study teacher at Briarcliff Manor Congregational Church in NY.
Dorothy's greatest pride and joy was her family. Her family has many fond memories of the birthday parties she threw for her grandchildren at the lake home in Northwood, NH.
In addition to her parents, Dorothy is predeceased by her sister Constance Curtin, PhD., and her brother-in-law, Professor David Y. Curtin, PhD.
Dorothy leaves behind her loving husband of 62 years, H. Wilson Eaves; three sons, James Eaves and his wife, Brenda, Donald Eaves and his wife, Zenalia, Richard Eaves and his wife, Andrea; daughter, Barbara Swanton and her husband, Mark; many grandchildren including Joshua D. Eaves, Samuel Eaves, Eliza Eaves, Theresa Kill and her husband, Luke, Samantha Eaves, Jarrod Eaves, Hannah Bongiovanni and her husband, Franklin, Lindsay Swanton and Sean Swanton, as well as her great-grandson, James Bongiovanni.
SERVICES: A memorial service will be held at the Exeter Congregational Church on 21 Front Street, Exeter, NH on Saturday, December 3 from 11am to 12pm with luncheon following the service. Family and friends are invited to attend. Interment will be in the Exeter Congregational Church Memorial Garden. In lieu of flowers, donations in Dorothy's memory may be made to The Inn at Deerfield, PO BOX 57, Deerfield NH 03037.
Arrangements have been entrusted with the Cremation Society of New Hampshire.
