Douglas Hamilton Gutteridge, Sr. Born in Arlington, Ma on February 7, 1922. Son of Dr. John Hamilton Gutteridge, DMD and Irene Irwin Ruth Gutteridge of Arlington and Lexington, Ma. He sang in the Trinity Boys Choir in Boston, Ma. After graduating from Arlington High School in 1940, he enlisted in the US Army and became a Glider Pilot instructor for the Army Air Corps during WWII. After his service to the country, he was trained as a Tea Taster for Chase and Sanborne in Hoboken, NJ. He transformed that chemistry knowledge into an interest and education in pharmacology and had a satisfying career as a Pharmacist at Theater Pharmacy in Lexington, MA. In 1956 he married Jeannette Gregory and together they decided to pursue his long-time dream of owning a dairy farm that he ran successfully in Groton, MA until 1965. He then used his entrepreneurial spirit and owned a school bus route for the Groton School District, which he ran for several years. After consolidation of buses, he used his talents as a carpenter and worked as a general contractor in northern Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire. Among his many residential projects, he was involved in the building of the library at Lawrence Academy and Johnsons Drive-In Restaurant, in Groton. He retired and moved to Rindge and purchased a hillside on Route 119 where he and his family built their home, which burned down in 1995. He and his wife, an elementary school teacher in Shirley, MA, have enjoyed their retirement in East Rindge where he spent his time gardening and rooting for his favorite sports teams. He was a member of the Rindge Veterans Association, and affiliated with the Altemont Lodge in Peterborogh, NH, the Scottish Rite Bodies and Aleppo Shriners Temple. He is survived by his wife Jeannette, daughter Beth Gutteridge and Jean MacKenzie, son and daughter-in-law Douglas and Cassandra Gutteridge, and son, Andrew Gutteridge and his fiancée Marianna Aurtiero. He died April 10 in Hanover, NH after complications due to an injury. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday April 17 at 1:00 p.m. at the Unitarian-Universalist Church on Central Street in Winchendon, Ma. The burial is at the convenience of the family.
