Dudley M. Outcalt passed away peacefully on May 29, 2024.

Captain Outcalt's life exemplified dedication to service and the pursuit of knowledge. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, he graduated from Western Hills High School in 1969. A congressional appointment led him to the Naval Academy, where he excelled, graduating in 1973 with a degree in physics.

Upon graduation, Captain Outcalt attended a year of nuclear power training and submarine school. He served as auxiliary division officer and reactor control division officer on the USS TECUMSEH (SSBN-628). He then became a "Plank Owner" communications officer on the USS MEMPHIS (SSN-691). He left active duty in 1978. He continued his career in the Naval Reserve and retired in 2003 after 30 years of service.

In his civilian life, he pursued advanced degrees, earning a Master of Science in electrical engineering, a Master of Business Administration, and a Doctor of Philosophy in renewable energy. His expertise led him to successful careers in the nuclear power and commercial electrical generation industries.

As a natural teacher, Captain Outcalt capped his impressive career with 11 years as a professor at the Milwaukee School of Engineering, inspiring students with his knowledge and passion. One of his greatest joys was serving as faculty advisor to his students as they secured first place in the 2010 National Green Energy Challenge: a first for the college.

Captain Outcalt’s family will hold him close in their hearts. Nancy, his wife of over 50 years, was a constant source of support. Her unwavering presence shone brightly even through times of adversity. His children, Mark and Emily, and their spouses, Robyn and Abhijit (Jeet), hold his memory close, keeping his spirit alive in their hearts. His grandsons, Liam and Benjamin, are a cherished part of their grandfather's legacy.
