Edith Evelyn (Ellis) McLaughlin, affectionately known as Edie, passed away following a lengthy illness on Friday, September 26th at Riverside Rest Home in Dover, NH at the age of 98 years, 9 months and 20 days.
Edie was born in St. Francis, Kansas on December 6, 1915 to Marcus and Myrtle (Finley) Ellis. She graduated high school in St. Francis and attended Adams College in Alamosa, CO. She moved frequently in support of her husband's career with the Southern Pacific Railroad. Most notably, she lived in Mexico during WWII as her husband helped with the transportation of materials needed for the war effort from South America and Mexico. She retired in 1981 to Payson, AZ where she lived until her husband, James W. McLaughlin passed away in 2000. Then wanderlust took over and she moved back to Colorado for a number of years, returning to Payson just as her health began to fail. She moved to the nursing home in New Hampshire in 2009 to be closer to family.
Edie is survived by her grandchildren, Brian Scott Childs of Nashville, TN, Elizabeth Childs Gray of Red Bluff, CA, Tami Childs Valyo of Dover, NH, and Timothy N. Salam of AZ; great-grandchildren, Tiffani L. Childs of Morristown, NJ, Sydney S. Gray of New Orleans, LA, Andrew McLaughlin Widney of Austin, TX, Amy C. Widney of Scottsdale, AZ, Kaylin Salam and Neal Salam of AZ. She was predeceased by her husband, James W. McLaughlin in 2000; her daughter, Leslie A. (Childs) McLaughlin in 2007; and granddaughter Chermine M. Salam-Serban in 1994.
A private family service is planned as her urn is placed in the family plot in the Alamosa Cemetery, Alamosa, Colorado.
