Edward M. Lindholm

Edward Milton Lindholm , 97, of Bristol, NH passed away peacefully at the NH Veterans CLC in Manchester NH on October 3, 2021, with his family at his side.

Ed was born in Andover, MA on February 24, 1924, to Yalmar and Mary Lindholm. He was a longtime resident of Andover, attended St. Augustine’s school in Andover and graduated from Central Catholic HS in 1941.

Ed then joined the Army Air Corp in 1943 at the age of 19 as a B-17 “Flying Fortress” navigator. Ed was stationed in England and flew 8 missions before his B-17 bomber was shot out of the skies over Germany. He parachuted to a landing in US-occupied France but was injured when he exited the aircraft, earning the Purple Heart and WW2 Air medal.

After the war, Ed returned to the Boston area and completed his engineering degree from MIT. He married his wife Mary Ernestine Donovan (Ernie) and started a family. He worked briefly for Boeing in Seattle, but he and Ernestine wanted to return to New England. Ed went back to MIT, earning another degree in Naval Architecture. He and Ernestine returned to his boyhood home in Andover MA. He worked in the Charlestown Naval shipyard as a Naval Architect on Navy ships, and later at the Portsmouth Naval shipyard on nuclear submarines.

Ed was a private pilot and owned his own plane that he enjoyed flying with friends and family all around New England. He especially enjoyed fishing trips to NH and Maine and flights for beach days with Ernestine to the Cape, Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, and Long Island.

In his earlier years, Ed enjoyed many outdoor sports: boating, snow and water skiing, hunting and fishing. He was an accomplished carpenter, plumber, electrician, and machinist. He even built his own boat and taught his entire family how to water ski.

In 1979, Ed retired and he and Ernestine purchased their house on Newfound Lake. Ernestine had been coming to the lake since she was a child and infected Ed with her love for the lake and area. Ed became a stalwart of the Arrowhead Point and Wulamat Road neighborhoods. If you wanted to know what was going on in the neighborhood, you contacted Ed. Ed was very knowledgeable and was quick to lend a hand.

Ed was predeceased by his loving wife M. Ernestine Lindholm. He is survived by his children: Christina Lindholm of Merrimac, MA; Mark Lindholm and his wife Kathryn of Austin, TX; Karen Lindholm of Chester, NH; Paul Lindholm and his wife Lea of Methuen, MA; Susan Lindholm and her husband Richard Schroeder of Andover, MA; grandchildren: Julia, Diana; Lindsay, Ryan, Kayla; Tara, Major Paul Robert USMC; Lindi; Lindsay, Michele, Brianna; great-grandchildren: Olivia, Mila; Keaton, Jaxon;
