Edward John Schmidt

Edward "Ed" J. Schmidt, Sr., 84, of Durham and Dover, died after a two year battle with Mantle Cell Lymphoma on April 18, 2023. Ed died peacefully at his Riverwoods Durham assisted living home with family by his side, after being wonderfully cared for by the Riverwoods staff.

 

Ed was born February 16, 1939  in Chicago, Illinois to John and Ada (Schipplock) Schmidt and grew up in Westfield, New Jersey. He moved to Durham with his family in 1976 to pursue a PhD.  In 1981 he was the first person to be conferred a PhD in Engineering Systems Design at the University of New Hampshire. He obtained BS and MS degrees from Columbia and Purdue.  Ed was a Diplomat in the American Academy of Environmental Engineers 

 

After a career in industry, Ed retired from the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services as Director of the Water Supply and Pollution Control Division. 

 

When not working or being a devoted husband, father and grandfather, Ed enjoyed hiking, sailing and traveling, especially by train. He remained passionate about working on and showing off his 1953 Hudson Hornet.

 

He was pre-deceased by Louella (Braman) his wife of 58 years, sister Marjorie, and brother Fred. He is survived by daughter Corinne McCrone and son-in-law, Martin of Durham; son Edward Jr. and daughter-in-law, Kim of Rochester; granddaughters Melissa Schmidt of Rochester, NY and Patricia McCrone of West Covina, CA and grandson Austin Schmidt of Colchester, CT.  He also leaves many nieces, nephews and cousins.

 

SERVICES: A private family burial will be held at the convenience of the family. Memorial gifts may be offered to St. John’s Anglican Catholic Church, 36 Canal St #224, Somersworth, NH 03878.
