Edwin “Ed” Callahan passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family in Peterborough New Hampshire, on August 28, 2026, at the age of 93. He was born on January 19, 1933, to Edwin and Dorothy (Beebe) Callahan in Montpelier, Vermont.

Edwin grew up working alongside his family at their store, “Callahan’s Market.” He graduated from St. Michael’s High School as valedictorian of his class in 1950. After earning a degree in finance from the University of Vermont in 1954, Ed married his childhood sweetheart Theresa Desilets, whom he had known his whole life. They then moved to Nuremberg, Germany, where Ed served as a first lieutenant in the Army for two years. While stationed there, they welcomed their first-born, Cathleen. They then returned home to Montpelier, Vermont, where Ed began his career in finance. Their daughters, Vicki and Lynn, were born there before Ed’s work took the family to Watertown, New York, in 1962.

In 1970, Ed was offered a position as vice president at New England Merchants National Bank. The family then relocated to Wellesley, Massachusetts, where their son Christopher was born. After six years of city life, they longed to get back to a quieter and more rural environment.

In 1976, they bought a country store on the common in Rindge, New Hampshire, and named it “The Village Grocer.” The family worked together in the store and grew to love the townspeople. Soon after purchasing the store, Edwin and Theresa bought a 1763 Cape farmhouse, which they lovingly restored. Over the years, many family holidays and gatherings took place there, including all four of their children’s weddings.

In 1986, Ed decided to try his hand at real estate. He worked for Despres and Associates and later worked with Marc Tieger, (Tieger Realty), who became a treasured friend.

In 2019, Ed and Theresa left their beloved home and moved to Scott-Farrar in Peterborough, NH, where they made many friends and were ever so grateful for the care they received there.

Edwin is predeceased by his wife, Theresa, and his siblings, Beebe Gregoire and Richard Callahan. He is survived by his four children: Cathleen Shun, Vicki Perkins, Lynn Callahan and Chris Callahan. He was also adored by his seven grandchildren: Teresa and Kasey Shun, Jesse and Alexander Perkins, Jacqueline Coll, Kyle and Derek Turgeon, and Kaitlyn and Sean Callahan. Edwin was also blessed with seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Our dad loved his family dearly and will be remembered for his sense of humor, his integrity, his love of Aloha shirts, crossword and jigsaw puzzles, and family gatherings. We will miss his beautiful singing voice, and we’ll hear him in our memories saying, “You done good!” We also loved how he embraced the role of the Tin Man when he marched with The Wizard of Oz for 20 years at the Keene Pumpkin Festival.

The family will host a celebration of life this coming spring.
