Eleanor (Rich) Brothwell, 99, of Henniker, NH, passed away on April 14, 2018, after a brief illness.
Eleanor was born on July, 8th, 1918 in Middletown, CT. She served in the Navy during World War II and attained the rank of Ensign prior to her discharge. She married William J. Brothwell in 1948. The couple lived in Boston, MA prior to moving to Sharon, MA in the early 1950's, where they raised four children. She and her husband were members of First Congregational Church of Sharon until 1976, when they moved to Henniker, NH. She was an active member of the community. She was as a member of the Congregational Church of Henniker, as well as the League of Women Voters. She also volunteered at the White Birch in Henniker. As an alumna of Colby-Sawyer, she provided modest funding for their scholarship program. Ellie, as she was known to her friends, was an avid camper and traveler. She and her family spent many a summer crisscrossing the country, visiting national parks, and camping along the way. She was also an avid organic gardener; always saving seeds from her best plants and hand pollinating plants to get just the specimen she wanted.
She was predeceased by her husband, William J. Brothwell in 1980. She is survived by her four children, Jay, John, Betsy, and Philip, as well as 9 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
A celebration of Ellie's life will be held on Saturday, June 30th at 11:00am at the Congregational Church of Henniker, 43 Maple Street, Henniker, NH 03242 in the sanctuary with a reception to follow in the Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Congregational Church of Henniker.
