Elin Calvert Myrin Phinizy, 76, of Acworth, NH, passed away peacefully on September 26, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on February 26, 1949, in Philadelphia, PA, to Lars and Helen Myrin, Elin made her home in Acworth for most of her life after meeting her husband, Jay Phinizy, in Berkeley, California. For 54 years, Elin and Jay shared not only a marriage but a deep and abiding friendship. They were true partners and best friends, and that bond was the heart of their life together.
Elin was happiest at home, where she poured her energy into the gardens she loved. She filled her world with beauty — from flowers blooming around her yard to crotchet masterpieces. She was also an enthusiastic MotoGP fan, never missing the thrill of the races.
A devoted dog lover, Elin dedicated herself to raising, showing, and breeding Scottish Deerhounds. She was active for many years in the Scottish Deerhound Club of America and the Cheshire Kennel Club, finding great pride in raising championship dogs and advocating for the welfare of animals at the New Hampshire State House.
Elin had a brilliant mind and a wide-ranging knowledge that amazed those around her. Though she never pursued a formal degree, she had a deep curiosity and insight into all things. She was also a playful, trick-some grandmother who delighted in being silly with her step-grandsons, Adam and Elliot — sometimes fibbing just enough to make them laugh, always caring, always present.
Elin is survived by her husband and best friend, Jay; her son, Samuel “Nipper” Phinizy, and his wife, Sarah; and her beloved step-grandsons, Adam and Elliot. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings Willie, Bertie, Bethie, and Sally.
A celebration of Elin’s life will be held in the spring in Acworth.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Elin’s memory to the AKC Canine Health Foundation (https://www.akcchf.org/).
