Elizabeth "Betty" Anne Bennett

Elizabeth “Betty” Bennett, age 87, passed away peacefully under hospice care on June 9, 2025, surrounded by love. Born at home in Berwick, Maine on November 18, 1937, she was the youngest of six children to Louise and Linward Brown.

Betty grew up in Berwick and graduated from Berwick High School in 1955. Petite at just 4'11", she nevertheless made her mark as a spirited member of the girls’ basketball team. It was during those school years that she met her future husband and the love of her life, Thomas Bennett. The two were married on November 29, 1958, and made their home in Somersworth, New Hampshire, where Betty lived for the remainder of her life.

Betty was known for her determination and trailblazing spirit. After raising their three sons, she returned to school at age 40 to attend Portsmouth Voc Tech. She went on to break barriers at the Somersworth GE plant by becoming one of the first women promoted to a skilled set-up position— a role she proudly held for 16 years until her retirement in 1996. That same year, she completed the Boston Marathon; milestones she described with: “Life really does begin at 40; it’s never too late.”

A woman of deep faith and boundless energy, Betty gave generously of her time and talents. She was a devoted member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, singing in the Folk Group and contributing handmade crafts to their annual holiday fair. Alongside Tom, she volunteered with the United Way’s “Clowns for Christ,” bringing joy to nursing homes and children’s hospitals. Together, they also portrayed Mr. and Mrs. Claus at the GE Christmas party for many years and mentored engaged couples through the “Towards Marriage” program.

Betty cherished the beauty of New England and lived life to the fullest. She loved hiking, biking, gardening her award-winning roses, and spending time at the family camp on Lovell Lake. She was always ready for adventure—whether zip-lining with her grandson TJ, dancing with friends, or exploring new places across the U.S., Europe, and the islands. Her passion for square and round dancing brought her lifelong friendships through the Nubble Lighthouse Keepers Club, Happy Time Squares, and Alfred Dancers.

Betty was predeceased by her beloved husband Tom, her parents, brothers Donald, Edward “Tubby,” Richard, and Bobby Brown; her sister Florence Chasse; and her granddaughter Alicia Phillips.

She is survived by her sons Dale (Pam), Eric (Karen), and Mark; grandchildren Heather, TJ (Calli), Kenneth, and Michael (Jenn); great-grandchildren Jadiah, Kylen, Forever, Jordan, Parker, Ashley, Zoe, Mackenzie, Emma, and Liam; and many treasured nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Her life was a shining example of love, courage, and joy. Betty will be forever remembered and deeply missed.
