Ellwyn F. Hayslip, 77, of Tow Path Lane crossed over peacefully on March 19, 2004 after a bout with cancer. Born in Flushing, Queens, New York, the son of Ellwyn, Sr. and Minnie (Warren) Hayslip, Ellwyn was a radioman in the United States Navy at the end of World War II. He then moved to Burlington, Vermont to study Art Education at the University of Vermont (UVM). He continued his loyalty to UVM since graduating in 1950 and recently served as his class president. He earned his Masters Degree at Columbia University and supervised the art program in the Burlington Public Schools, taught at Johnson (Vermont) State College, and at Kutztown (Pennsylvania) State College. In 1962 Ellwyn moved his family to the Plymouth, New Hampshire area to initiate the Art Education Program at Plymouth State University, and he taught in that program for 39 years. He earned a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study from Syracuse and a degree in Art Therapy from the Herfordshire College of Art and Design in St. Albans, England. Subsequent residences in New Hampshire include Littleton, Lakeport, and, since 1979, Concord. Ellwyn studied in the American Southwest and many of his paintings reflect his love of American Indian traditions. He held a great fondness for the Steamboat Colorado Ski Area and his many friends on the Steamboat Ski Patrol. He worked with various community organizations, most notably and over twenty years with the Central New Hampshire Artists in Plymouth, NH. He chaired the education committee of the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen. He was one of the founders of the North Country Studio Arts Conference. In his retirement he enjoyed travel, skiing, reading, gardening, and playing with his grandsons. Surviving him are his spouse of 53 years, Josephine (Jo) Buck Hayslip; two sons, Ellwyn Jr. (Skip) and his wife Sally (Fortier) Hayslip of Canterbury, NH and Steven Hayslip of Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Other family members include; grandsons Ellwyn IV and Graham Hayslip, and Steven's close friend Tracie Grant of Laconia. His sister, Dorothy Sheridan and brother, Robert Hayslip, predeceased him. Friends and colleagues are invited to join the family in a celebration of Ellwyn's life on Saturday, May 22 at 10 Tow Path Lane in Concord.
