Eunice “Corky” Garboski (nee Bown), 78, passed away peacefully at her home in Strafford, NH, on July 28, 2025. Born on February 27, 1947, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Joseph and Bess Brown, Corky was a spirited and independent soul right from the start. She chose the nickname “Corky” for herself as a young girl—an early sign of the individuality and confidence that would characterize her life.
From 1967 at Mohawk Airlines to 1995 at US Air, now American Airlines, Corky enjoyed a vibrant career as a flight attendant. It was through her work in aviation that she met Stephen Garboski, an Allegheny pilot. The two shared a remarkable 44 years of marriage that included snorkeling off windjammer cruises in the Caribbean Islands, living in their RV while traveling the West Coast, participating in chase crews for balloonists in Albuquerque, NM, riding their motorcycles throughout New England, and together running a B&B, The Province House, in their Strafford home.
Corky and Steve were the proud parents of one daughter, Bethany, with whom they lived several adventurous years in Los Angeles, while always returning to Strafford for the Christmas holidays and summer vacations. They hosted nostalgic Christmas Eve parties and July 4th parties for 30 years; they welcomed the same neighbors and friends annually to reconnect and reminisce, making the gatherings a special tradition for many.
Corky and Bethany loved music and theater, participating in productions like Gypsy and Charlotte’s Web for the Lakeside Players and the Leddy Center. With a good entrepreneurial sense, Corky ran a modeling program to build confidence in young girls, and she was Bethany’s defacto talent manager in the entertainment world in Los Angeles, as well as her number one supporter and fan. Never one to be idle, she knit several intricately designed sweaters and afghans.
Without fail, Corky’s love and attention went to her many dear dogs, her most recent one named Teddy, a Pomeranian, who was her constant companion, even when she was peddling her tricycle for exercise, and especially later when she was bed-ridden in hospice.
Corky is survived by her husband Stephen Garboski, her daughter Bethany Bruno and son-in-law Juan Pablo Bruno, her granddaughter Elka Bruno, and two step-sons, Stephen Garboski and Joseph Garboski.
Steve and Bethany, care-takers for Corky during her last few years, are very grateful to Cornerstone VNA and Hospice for their vital and loving assistance.
There will be a celebration of Corky’s life on Saturday, August 9th, at 10:00 on the lawn at 42 Bow Lake Estates on Kooaukee Island, Strafford, with brunch to follow. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in her memory to a local SPCA or to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Corky’s light continues to shine in the lives she touched, the skies she flew, and the family she loved.
