Evelyn (Evie) Anne Joss, loving and amazing mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, caring sister and aunt, and devoted friend, died peacefully on March 16, 2024, at the age of 88. She was surrounded by the love of her family just before she passed away.
Evie was born November 13, 1935 in Sioux Lookout, Ontario, to Michael and Anne (Schreyer) Kolody. She graduated from Sioux Lookout Continuation School in 1953 and from St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in Thunder Bay, Ontario, in 1956. She later earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Northeastern University, Boston.
Evie had a long career as a registered nurse, which included practicing as an obstetrics nurse in Washington D.C. and a psychiatric nurse in Belmont, MA. In 2004 she received the Margaret Tibbetts award for leadership in Nursing from McLean Hospital, where she worked for many years.
Evie had a pioneering and adventurous spirit and traveled across Canada and the United States with her first husband, James Wemyss Joss, and their growing family. After settling in the Washington D.C. area, it wasn't unusual for Evie to make "road trips" to Canada to visit family and friends. Evie moved to Massachusetts in 1974, where she became a diehard Bruins fan and a member of a curling club. In 1985 she moved to Warner, NH where she enjoyed tending to her large vegetable garden, idyllically located along the Warner River. She served on the Warner Zoning Board and the Warner Historical Society Board of Directors. In 2000 she was the recipient of the Warner Men's Club Community Service Award. Evie moved to Concord, NH in 2007. She was a member of the East Concord Garden Club and a volunteer usher at the Capitol Center for the Arts. She also volunteered for many years at CASA of New Hampshire, advocating for neglected children. Evie planted flowers and made lasting friendships wherever she went.
Evie lived frugally but generously gave to others throughout her life. She enjoyed traveling, reading, gardening, and painting, and was a talented quilter, knitter, and sewer. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family, even when the visits were to help with laundry or paint a room. She was especially delighted to spend time with her great-grandchildren. Evie also cherished her Tuesday gatherings with the "Dominos Gals" in Concord. She will forever be remembered as a brave, generous, hardworking, and faithful person.
Evie is survived by her four children: Heather Anne Paul (John Thomas Paul) of Surfside Beach, SC; Jaylyn Catherine Joss (Merton Eugene Thompson IV) of Harvard, MA; Robin Elizabeth Joss of Myrtle Beach, SC; and Peter Stevenson Joss (Sandy Caiado) of Windham, NH; six grandchildren, Anne Catriona Thompson (Daniel Rodriguez) of Lowell, MA; Merton Eugene Thompson V (Maya Thomas) of London, England; William Joss Thompson of Harvard, MA; Hillary Paul Metcalf (David) of Chelsea, MA; Harry Stevenson Paul (Rachel Wong) of Philadelphia, PA; Kalote Rose Joss of Watertown, MA; and five great-grandchildren Joan Clementine Rodriguez, Everett Floyd Metcalf; Laura Winter Rodriguez, Murphy Harriet Metcalf, and Clifford Felix Metcalf. Also surviving is Evie's brother Michael Kolody and his wife Dora Jane of Quesnel, British Columbia, and a sister Elizabeth Kolody of Winnipeg, Manitoba. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Roberta Kolody of Ottawa and Doreen Kolody of Quesnel, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents and two brothers, Clifford Michael Kolody and Carl William Kolody. She was also predeceased by her son-in-law Robert Dale Schweikert.
ARRANGEMENTS: A private gathering to celebrate Evie's life will be held at a later date. Assisting the family with arrangements is the Cremation Society of NH, Boscawen.
