January 20, 1939 — November 26, 2023

Concord

Fernand P. Hamel, aged 84, of Concord, passed away peacefully on November 26, 2023.

Fernand, fondly known as Fred, was born the second of 8 children to Rosario Hamel and Jeannette Boudreau on January 20, 1939 in Sherbrooke, Quebec. His strong work ethic started with assisting his mother in the care of his younger siblings, then as a paper boy at 10 years old, golf caddy at 12, and a long career in textile and small businesses. He immigrated to Manchester, NH at the age of 21 with his family and new wife Dorothee Provencal Hamel to work at the Concord Mills. They eventually became proud naturalized citizens and raised their family in Exeter and Northwood, while never forgetting their Canadian heritage. His progression in the textile industry continued, with stints at Sylvania Corp., Brunswick Corporation and eventually as the Plant Manager for Thomas Hodgson and Sons in Allenstown.

Fred ran the Northwood Motel and set roots in Pittsburg with his second wife of 39 years, Shirley Hamel, to run Treats and Treasures and where they founded the Pittsburg Home Center. Active in the community, they were named citizens of the year for their community volunteerism and engagement.

Fred liked to play as hard as he worked, and when he wasn’t telling stories and jokes, he enjoyed playing (and watching) hockey, snowmobiling, relaxing on his boat on First Connecticut Lake, and gardening. He was faithful to his Catholic roots, serving as an alter boy in his youth and attending church regularly.

Fred is survived by his wife Shirley; his three children and their spouses, Lyn Ward (Chris), Steve Hamel (Jean) and Lisa Fritz (Rick); three step-children, Mike Remick (Kim), Tom Remick, and Dave Remick (Lynda). He is also survived by four siblings Jean D’arc Boisvert, Jaques Hamel, Jackie Gravel (Serge), and Dennis Hamel (Mary). Fred’s legacy continues with his 10 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

Private services will be held for close family.  In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Pittsburg Fire Association, 1684 North Main Street, Pittsburg, NH 03592.
