Francis Wilbur Day

Monroe, NH - Francis W. Day, 90, passed away Sunday, May 9, 2021, at the home of his daughter following a decline in health. Born on March 10, 1931 in Cornish, Maine, Francis was the son of Wilbur and Rebecca Day and younger brother to Althea Day Blackie.
As a young man, Francis had a talent for baseball, playing outfield, and was an outstanding runner. He was drafted into the Army at the age of 18, trained as a tank mechanic, but was placed as a medic once he reached Korea. The medal of valor was presented to him for risking his life to save a South Korean general, but Francis felt that if he wouldn't be offered this medal for saving the life of a fellow American soldier then he didn't want it for saving the life of someone just because they were a high ranking official. This was the true essence of Francis; titles meant nothing.
Once he was back on American soil, he vowed to never leave it again. And he didn't. In 1962 he married Donna Libby, and they settled on Main Street in Cornish surrounded by wonderful neighbors, giving his daughters the best small-town country life. He worked for Central Maine Power for more than 30 years starting out as a lineman and advancing his way up to District Manager.
After retiring from Central Maine Power Company, Francis and Donna relocated to his family farm on Hessian Hill where they enjoyed the wildlife, gardens, and his love of cutting, splitting and stacking firewood.
Francis was known for his quiet nature, subtle humor, and stoic strength.
After losing his wife of 52 years, Francis spent the last three winters with his daughter in New Hampshire. He took many trips into Vermont and enjoyed feeding the deer that came to the yard.
This winter, his health declined, but he carried himself with strength, accepting what was given him, and never complained.
He is predeceased by his parents and wife. He is survived by his daughters, Shelley Jewell and her husband Lincoln of Monroe, NH, and Rebecca Dillon and her husband Michael of Westbrook; his beloved sister, Althea Blackie of Scarborough. He is also survived by his grandchildren Tyler, Jacob, and Beckett Jewell, Catherine Lacoss, Seamus and Molly Dillon and his great-grandchildren, Leo and Vivian Lacoss.
His family would like to thank North Country Health and Hospice for the care and compassion they provided Francis and his family. This team cannot be praised enough for what they do. They are truly a group of angels.
A graveside service will be held at a future date at his home on Hessian Hill.
