Francis Mason

Francis M. Mason, 87, of Manchester, passed away on September 10, 2022 at the Elliot Hospital, Manchester, NH.

Born on July 10, 1935 in New Martinsville, West Virginia, he is the son of the late Harley and Ada (Clegg) Mason.

Francis graduated in 1957 as history major from University of California, Riverside, entering as a charter student when the campus opened in 1954. After a military stint as a Special Agent in Counter Intelligence, serving primarily in France, Francis earned his Masters degree at Wake Forest University and PhD in history from the University of Connecticut. His published historical articles dealt with topics about Edwardian England. Francis moved to New Hampshire in 1967 to teach at Saint Anselm College. He served as chair of the history department for two decades, was president of the faculty senate eight time, and was an active member of the college AAUP chapter. Francis took an early retirement in 1998, objecting to the college’s removal of “religion” from its anti-discrimination policy. For years he was an active member of the Manchester Historical Society, serving on its board for ten years. Francis edited from its collection, a journal and published as Childish Things: The Reminiscence of Susan Baker Blunt.

In addition to his parents, Francis was predeceased by his brother, Harley Mason. Francis is survived by his sister, Mary Dean Dunn of New Martinsville, WV; and numerous nephews and nieces, grand nephews and grand nieces.

ARRANGEMENTS: Per Francis’s request, he will be laid to rest at the Isle of Shoals. Assisting the family with arrangements is the Cremation Society of New Hampshire, Manchester.
