Frank William (Bill) Meyette, 89 of Newbury, Vermont, died Monday, November 28, 2005 at the Grafton County Nursing Home after a short illness. Bill was beloved by all his family, neighbors and friends. He was born in Newbury on September 5, 1916, the son of L. Mede Meyette and Maud McClintock. Except for his military service in Europe, Bill lived in Newbury his whole life. Bill worked on the home farm in Newbury and with the Civilian Conservation Corps in Groton during the New Deal. When World War II started, Bill enlisted with the United States Army. He served in the European campaign as a gunnery sergeant. He even shared a lunch with General Eisenhower on a log in a muddy field in the middle of France. After farming, Bill worked as a carpenter for Clifford Construction, and then went into business on his own, building A-Frames and general carpentry. Bill also worked for the Town of Newbury Highway Department and was a forest fire warden for the town and the state of Vermont. When Bill and Vera retired, they enjoyed camping and traveling to Prince Edward Island. They especially loved the local flea markets, buying and selling, making crafts, and most of all, making friends. Survivors include his wife Vera of North Haverhill, his sister Alice Emerson of Newbury, his brother Gilbert "Pop" Meyette of Newbury, and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service is planned for the spring at the Meyette house on Scotch Hollow Road in Newbury. Cards may be sent to Vera Meyette at the Grafton County Nursing Home, Dartmouth College Highway, North Haverhill, NH 03774. The Cremation Society of New Hampshire is directing arrangements. In lieu of flowers toy donations may be made to the "Toys for Tots" drop off at the Cremation Society of New Hampshire 243 Hanover Street, Manchester N.H.
