Genevieve (Craver) Gurnee, 102, of Concord passed away peacefully of heart failure on Thursday, August 30, 2018, at Merrimack County Nursing Home, with family at her side.
Born in Newark, NY on September 19, 1915, Genevieve was the daughter of Benjamin and Elizabeth (Gutteling) Craver. She graduated from Newark High School excelling in secretarial skills and worked at Jackson and Perkins Rose Garden in Newark. A few of many jobs she held were: Tax Collector for the Town of Kingsbury, NY, Assistant Postmistress in Smiths Basin, NY, and Office Manager for Easter Seals in Hudson Falls, NY. In NH, she worked at the Concord Bible Bookstore, a garment store and as Senate Recorder in the New Hampshire State Senate.
As a young woman, Genevieve loved dancing to Guy Lombardo and other 1930's bands. Later, she was expert at crocheting and served as a judge of crocheted items at the Deerfield Fair. She had a wonderful sense of humor and regaled family and friends at Horseshoe Pond Place with funny adventures from her life.
Family that predeceased her are: Her husband, Howard Gurnee, who was the love of her life, son Robert who died in infancy, son Edwin Gurnee of Canterbury, daughter Barbara Collins of Smiths Basin, NY and her sister Thelma Bardeen of Geneva, NY.
She is survived by her daughter, Joan Murray and her fiancé Richard Sirois, of Manchester, daughter-in-law Sue Porter and her husband John of Boscawen, granddaughters Mary Kerr and her husband Brock of Newmarket, Anna Gurnee of Canterbury, and Cheryl Carlson of Elgin, SC., great-granddaughter Danielle Weiner and her husband Ryan of Palm Bay, FL, great-grandsons Kevin Carlson and his wife Jessica of Concord, and Duncan and Corbin Carlson of Elgin, SC, two great-great-grandchildren, Cameron and Eva Kerr of Newmarket, nieces Bettie Olsen of Geneva, NY, Kathy Benjamin of Canandaigua, NY, Faye Stein of Auburn, NY, and Sharon Perrotto of Waterloo, NY, and nephew Don Briggs of Billings, MT.
Her family gives a special thank you to Genevieve's many neighbors at Horseshoe Pond who provided support and care during the 17 years she resided there, and appreciation to the staff of 5 North at Concord Hospital, Merrimack County Nursing Home, and Concord VNA Hospice for the professional and loving care they provided to Genevieve in her last few weeks.
Following cremation, a memorial service will be held Saturday, September 15th at Horseshoe Pond Place, 28 Commercial St, Concord, at 2 pm.
Urn burial will be at the convenience of the family in Kingsbury Cemetery in Kingsbury, NY.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: The TCS Scholarship Fund, payable to Trinity Christian School, 80 Clinton Street, Concord NH 03301. Genevieve was a long-time church member and two of her granddaughters attended Trinity Christian School. Alternatively, donations could be made to the American Cancer Society at cancer.org. Genevieve was a colon cancer survivor and lost two children to cancer.
