George A. Travers, 84, of Hollis passed away peacefully on July 1, 2026 at the Community Hospice House in Merrimack after a long battle with cancer.

George was born on July 12, 1941, to Frederick Earl Travers and Hilda Catherine (Rettig) Travers in Tacoma, Washington. He moved with his family to Long Beach, California in 1942 and graduated from high school there in 1959.

Following high school, George enlisted in the United States Air Force and served proudly as an electronics technician at the Air Force Geophysics Laboratory in Bedford, Massachusetts. During this time George participated in a wide range of atmospheric research activities. Upon separation from the Air Force in 1963, George became a civilian employee of the Air Force serving from 1963 to 1996 when he retired from Hanscom Air Force Base. During George’s long civilian career, he continued his work at the laboratory and then transitioned into a program management position at Hanscom’s Electronic Systems Center, where he led a large team in the development and deployment of security technology for the protection of nuclear weapons and other high valued resources. While at the Geophysics Laboratory, George met his beloved wife Donna. They were married on March 12, 1988. Sadly, Donna passed away on September 23, 2023.

Outside of work George donated a great deal of his time to community service. George supported the Lowell Boys club as a Corporator implementing a number of programs over the years. He established a popular woodworking program and an auto mechanics program. At the YMCA he served as swimming coach for the regional competitive swimming team and taught classical swimming techniques with a concentration on endurance training. George was also deeply involved in conservation efforts and was deeply committed to conserving and improving the environment. He was a member of the Beaver Brook Association in Hollis and served on the Board of Supervisors for the Hillsborough County Conservation District, the New Hampshire Association of Conservation Districts, the New Hampshire State Conservation Committee, and the Town of Hollis Agriculture Commission. George was also an avid outdoorsman and explorer who adored New Hampshire. He enjoyed hiking, kayaking, and touring the countryside with Donna in their Miata.

George always had a smile and a kind word for all, able to become good friends with a stranger within minutes of meeting and, as a result, had a very wide circle of friends. He will be remembered most for his kindness and his quiet nature. Though a man of few words, his mind was an encyclopedia of knowledge. His quiet kindness left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

George is predeceased by his wife Donna and is survived by a son Scott and wife Pam, a daughter Karen and husband Michael, a daughter Kathleen, and a grandson David.

Per George’s request there will be no services. Burial will be private, alongside Donna, at Moreland cemetery in Danville, Kentucky.
