George R. Knapp

Listen to Obituary

George “Butch” Knapp, known for his warm heart, steadfast loyalty, and deep devotion to his family, passed away on September 20, 2025. He was a man like no other—loving, kind, and completely irreplaceable.

Born with a spirit for adventure, Butch grew up in Poughkeepsie, NY, where he attended Arlington High School. During his school years, he ran cross country, excelled as a gymnast, and achieved the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout. His talent and showmanship even took him to television, where he and a friend performed a daring chair-stacking handstand act on a popular variety show, balancing nine chairs high. He continued performing locally for charitable causes, bringing joy to many in his hometown.

Butch built a life through hard work and helping others. Over the years, he worked as an auto mechanic, mason, carpenter, and all-around handyman. For a time, he also served as a private investigator for George Baker Ltd., adding yet another chapter to his colorful and accomplished life.

Butch’s passions extended far beyond his work. He loved fishing, hunting, camping, and playing guitar. He had a deep love for motorcycles and cars—restoring them, riding them, and teaching others to love them too. One of his proudest moments was teaching his daughter, Amy Jo, to ride a motorcycle—watching her take after him with fearless jumps and fast rides. He later built a go-kart for his grandchildren, and delighted in teaching them to fish and drive.

In his later years, Butch embraced technology in his own way, becoming a prolific daily texter. His usual message, “Love you. God bless you and your day.” was a simple, steady reminder of his unwavering love and faith. Although not all appreciated receiving them at 4 a.m. in the morning, they loved him and responded with love.

Butch is survived by his loving wife, Beverly Knapp; his daughter, Amy Jo Fortin and her husband James; and his beloved grandchildren, Matthew (Rebecca), Alley, and Hannah Fortin. He also leaves behind his siblings: Sharon Garcia (the late Joseph), Mary Swanson (Richard), Gene Knapp (Gloria), Roxann Weeks (Robert), Deborah Love (Peter), and Henry Knapp (Doreen); brothers-in-law Lawrence Therrian and Mark Merritt, as well as many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly. He was predeceased by his sisters, Maureen Therrian and Donna Merritt.
