George Putnam Reed, III of Manchester, NH, passed on at his home on May 20, 2013.
Born in Portland, Maine, on April 29, 1927, the son of George P. Reed, II and Frieda Schonland Reed, he attended South Portland High School, served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany from 1945 to 1947, and graduated magna cum laude from the University of Maine. Mr. Reed married Jeanne L. Shaw on June 23, 1951. Mrs. Reed passed on in July 1997.
Mr. Reed served as a Professional Structural Engineer for Kalwall Corporation in Manchester, where he worked for 58 years as Chief Engineer, including research and development and quality control.
He was a member of the Manchester Country Club for over forty years, where he enjoyed playing golf and bridge. In 1966, he completed the examination for certification as a Club Director of the American Contract Bridge League and became a Life Master in 1974. Mr. Reed won numerous New England contract bridge championships and placed 2nd in the national championships.
Mr. Reed ran cross country and played baseball in college and also played for the Long Island, Maine summer league. He was a loyal Red Sox fan. He enjoyed playing tennis and was an avid runner. In 2012 he set the age group record for 85 and older on the Millennium Mile road-race course in Londonderry, NH, breaking the old record by over six minutes, and in 2013 he bettered his own record. He also enjoyed spending time on Long Island, Maine, boating and clamming in Casco Bay each weekend during the summer months.
Mr. Reed is survived by his beloved wife of ten years, Marilyn B. Shaw; a sister, Irma R. Andrews of Portland, Maine, three children: George P. Reed, IV and his wife Kerry of Bow, NH, Lawrence E. Reed and his wife Sara, of Weathersfield, VT, and Sally Reed Hutchinson of Windham, Maine; two nephews: Dr. David Andrews, MD, and Dr. Douglas Andrews, DVM, of Portland, ME; eleven grandchildren; and twenty-three great grandchildren. He is pre-deceased by his daughter, Paula Ann Giberson.
