Harold “Blackie” James Black, born on May 16, 1931, in Lynn, Massachusetts, to Peter and Catherine Black, passed away peacefully on December 24, 2024, at his home. He was surrounded by his devoted wife of 69 years and his cherished family. Harold’s remarkable 93 years were a blessing to all who knew him, as he was a loving son, brother, husband, father, and friend.
Harold proudly served in the Army during the Korean War, fulfilling a critical role as a high-speed Morse code operator for a U.S. general stationed in Germany. Following his military service, he embarked on a distinguished career in the defense industry. Starting with Thompson Electric, he ultimately retired from the missile systems division of Raytheon after more than 40 years of dedicated service.
A true Renaissance man and lifelong learner, Harold exemplified the pursuit of knowledge and personal growth. While working full-time and raising a family, he earned his bachelor’s degree by attending night classes. He was an avid reader and a self-taught artist who later refined his skills through professional painting lessons. Harold’s artistic talents shone through in the personalized watercolor Christmas and birthday cards he created annually for his children and grandchildren, treasures that will forever be cherished.
Harold’s diverse interests were a testament to his adventurous spirit. He practiced yoga and Tai Chi, explored photography, and mastered intricate boat model building. His hobbies included gardening, fishing, knitting, needlework, and amateur astronomy. In later years, he took up distance running at the age of 58, showcasing his commitment to health and excellence. His passion for running led him to win several senior races in Lynn, Peabody, and his hometown of Fremont, New Hampshire. He triumphantly ended his running career by winning a 5K race in celebration of his 89th birthday.
Perhaps Harold’s most profound legacy lies in the unwavering love and care he provided to his wife, Muriel, as she faced health challenges. Despite his own terminal condition, Harold’s selflessness and determination allowed him to continue caring for her, ensuring their days together were filled with love and dignity.
Harold is survived by his beloved wife, Muriel (Warren) Black, and their children: James Black and his wife Holly of Kennebunkport, Maine; Bonnie Hart and her husband Rich of Lynn, Massachusetts; and Susan Norton and her husband Jack of Sandown, New Hampshire. He is also survived by his treasured grandchildren: Abigail Robbins and her husband Todd, Andrew Black, Erin Hart, Sean Hart, and Jacqueline Allen, as well as great-grandchildren Sonnet Allen, Olivia Robbins, Addison Robbins, Mason Black, Jude Black, and Layla Black. Harold was predeceased by his parents, his siblings Jimmy, Bob, and Marie, and his dear grandson Marcelo Villegas.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Salvation Army, an animal rescue organization, or a charity of your choice.
SERVICES: A graveside service will be at Pine Grove Cemetery in Lynn, Massachusetts, for both Harold and his wife Muriel on Tuesday, January 21st at 11am.
