Harriett Edith Yates Lewis 89 of Hillsboro, NH, died peacefully Nov. 21, 2008 at the Hillsboro House Nursing Home. She was the devoted wife of the late Burton F. Lewis. Born in Stratford, Ct., July 12, 1919, the daughter of the late George A. and Surissa Yates. Graduated from Stratford (CT) High School in 1937. Completed secretarial studies and worked at the Singer Manufacturing Company. As a young woman Harriett was active in the Order of the Rainbow and was the first Grand Worthy Advisor for the State of Connecticut. After her marriage, she moved with her husband to Trumbull, Ct., where they raised their family. Harriett was a Girl Scout leader for the Housatonic Girl Scout Council for many years. She was very active with the Women's Society of the Nichols United Methodist Church in Trumbull, and after moving to Hillsboro, NH, with the Women's Society of the Hillsboro Methodist Church. She was a choir member at the Hillsboro Methodist Church and volunteered at the Concord Hospital coffee shop for many years. Harriett enjoyed playing her piano, knitting, singing in the church choir, and above all being a wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was a kind and considerate person and will be missed dearly by her sons Alan and his wife Lorraine of Hillsboro, William and his wife Donna of Hillsboro, daughters Carol Soennichsen and her husband Klaus of Westport, Connecticut, Susan Lewis and her companion Charles Surdel of Naugatuck, Connecticut; twelve grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; and her brother Elliott Yates of North Carolina. She was predeceased by her sister Surissa Yates Lewis, and her husband Burton F. Lewis who died on Jan. 5, 2006. A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.
