Henry Lawrence Fischer, age 94, died May 31,2022 at The Huntington @ Nashua NH. He was born in 1928 in Fitchburg MA. He was the son of Henry and Aina (Pera) Fischer. He was the husband of the late Madeline (Senn) Fischer, they were married on June 12, 1955 in Fitchburg MA. They made their home in Bedford MA for 9 years and Acton MA for 45 years where they raised their four sons.
Bud graduated from Fitchburg High School in 1945 and entered the Army Specialized Reserve Training Program at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and Norwich University, VT. He was activated in 1946 and served at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, MD; Fort Bragg, NC and the Army of Occupation in Livorno, Italy. He was honorably discharged in 1947.
He received a BS in Electrical Engineering from Tufts University in 1952. Pre-college and during college he worked for Brockelman Brothers, Fitchburg GrindingMachine Co., Independent Lock Co., and Webber Lumber Co. Post college he worked for General Motors, Tufts University Electrical Engineering and RCA Aerospace from which he retired in 1988 as a Senior Engineering Manager and Technical Director.
Engineering was the key interest in Bud’s life. From building model airplanes to model railroads, he went on to building balloon systems to study the jet stream and take photographs at 40,000-100,000 feet, including the first unmanned balloon system to fly around the world. He worked on the development of micro computers for Stellar Inertial Guidance, Automatic Testing Systems for the Army, Navy and Airfare, Recoverable Rocket Boosters, Command and Control Systems and Vehicle Automation. He was a Registered Professional Engineer, a member of Sigma Xi, AAII, AIEE, The Charles Tufts Society and the Tufts Packard Society.
Bud’s family summered at Fort Pond in Lancaster, MA and wintered on the ski slope at Bretton Woods, NH where they lived for several before moving to The Huntington @ Nashua, NH.
Bud is predeceased by his son Douglas and survived by his son Jeffrey and wife Margo McGowan of Waltham; son Gary, wife Linda of Andover and grandchildren Michelle, Matthew (wife Nora) and Benjamin and great grandchildren Sadie, Emilia and Darcy; son Karl, wife Denise of Everett and granddaughters Laura and Sarah.
SERVICES: A Memorial Gathering will be held at 10AM-11AM on June 27th, 2022, followed by the service at 11AM at the Cremation Society of New Hampshire, 243 Hanover Street, Manchester, NH.
