Herbert Hawes

Herbert A. Hawes, age 82, a resident of North Hampton for the past 21 years and a former resident of Chelmsford, MA, died Tuesday, July 18, at his home after an extended illness.

He was born on November 20, 1940, in Lancaster, NH, the son of the late Linwood and Margaret Hawes. He was also the brother of the late Linda Hollister. He was the husband of Judith (Whiteley) Hawes and would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in October.

In addition to his wife, Herb is survived by his loving family: a son, Kevin Hawes and his wife, Amy, from Clinton, TN; two daughters, Kristin (Hawes) McDonald and her husband, Shawn, from York, ME and Jennifer Hawes and her husband, Yann Poisson, from Providence, RI. He leaves four wonderful grandchildren – Shawna Morel, Jack and Cali McDonald, and Lucien Poisson. Dakota Morel is a great-grandchild.

He spent his grade school years in Groveton, NH, and his high school years in Plymouth, NH, where he excelled in sports and academics. Herb graduated from UNH in 1962 with a degree in Electrical Engineering and was immediately hired by New England Electric System. He spent 40 years at a job he truly enjoyed in multiple capacities. He also served seven years as an Army Reservist.

He was an avid music lover, tennis player, skier, jack of all trades and never without a camera. Dogs were his family, and he was rarely without one on his lap.

Herb volunteered as a driver for TASC (Transportation Assistance for Seacoast Citizens) for many years and looked forward each week to meeting new and old friends who were in need of a ride.

Kenneth Clark’s saying, “It is rare and a great source of strength for anyone to be totally consistent” describes how Herb lived his life.

ARRANGEMENTS: A private burial and celebration of life is planned for this fall in Plymouth, NH. Assisting the family with arrangements is the Cremation Society of NH, Hampton. Memorial donations may be made to the SPCA, PO Box 196, 104 Portsmouth Avenue, Stratham, NH 03885, or nhspca.org.
